These signs, posted around town occasionally, are “friendly reminder” signs.  Read them. And use them as reminders to take Personal Responsibility for Emergency Preparedness!

To remind residents to be prepared, warn residents during times of high fire or flooding risk, and alert residents of immediate action needed, the City of Mill Valley uses signs, sirens, automatic telephone calling systems, opt-in email notices, and the City’s website homepage.

Friendly REMINDER Signs

High Risk WARNING Signs

Immediate Action Needed ALERT SIRENS

TENS - Telecommunications Emergency Notification System

All residential landline phones in Mill Valley are pre-programmed into the County’s TENS system.  TENS will be used only for Immediate Action Needed Alerts during an actual event, and will automatically call affected areas with recorded instructions.  Listen and follow instructions quickly.

If you hear the sirens...

The continuous wailing of the City’s emergency sirens does not mean that you must immediately evacuate.  It does mean that you should immediately prepare to evacuate on short notice.

Immediately turn your radio to local media stations such as KCBS 740 AM or KGO 810 AM.  If ordered to evacuate, do so at once.  Any delay can risk your life.

NOTE: Mill Valley TESTS the sirens at NOON on the FIRST SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH.

Immediate Action Needed ALERT Telephone Notification

MEANS - Marin Emergency Advance Notification System

MEANS is an OPT-IN automatic calling system.  MEANS is used to provide  High Risk Warnings in advance of an actual event.  Listen and follow instructions to help mitigate risks, injury or damage if the event occurs.  Register for MEANS HERE

911

Do not call 911 if you hear the sirens.  Calls to 911 should ONLY be made in life-threatening situations.

This sign is posted throughout Mill Valley Flood Zone areas whenever the potential for flood-producing high tides and/or extreme rainfall are anticipated.  Residents should take appropriate actions to protect their family and property.  (See Floods Happen and Landslides Happen for more information.)

This sign is posted throughout Mill Valley during days of EXTREME FIRE DANGER.  Firefighters assess fire risk by assessing a combination of temperature, wind speed and directions, humidity and weather forecasts.  WHEN THIS SIGN IS POSTED PAY ATTENTION!

Less Friendly REMINDER Signs

You MUST leave clearance for our firefighters and ambulances to pass by on our narrow streets!  There is no quicker way to endanger YOU and YOUR NEIGHBORS than to block a street with your car.  HEED THE SIGNS PLEASE...

Pedestrian Evacuation Street Markings

“E” Street Markings

These signs, painted on selected street surfaces, identify pedestrian Escape / Evacuation / Egress / Emergency staircases and pathways headed downhill towards safety.  In the event of a wildfire, earthquake or other emergency requiring pedestrian escape, these street markings will help you locate shorter routes to safety.  Know in advance where these routes are located in your neighborhood.
